Oral sedation is a form of conscious sedation that we may recommend to ensure that your child has a comfortable experience each time they visit our office. Administered as an oral medication, oral sedation is simple and easy to use. Because oral sedation is a form of conscious sedation, your child will remain awake during their treatment, but they will feel more relaxed and at ease. If you and our pediatric dentist determine that oral sedation is right for your child, they will be prescribed a medication that will help them relax. You will be given instructions of when (before their scheduled appointment) the medication should be taken; be certain to follow all specific directions. When you and your child arrive at our office, your child will be awake but extremely relaxed. Although the medication is not strong enough, nor is it intended to, make your child fall asleep during their treatment. They may feel drowsy, and it is not unusual for children to fall asleep during their appointment, especially after nitrous oxide has been started to help them relax further.
